Sumatra espresso has a job to do: hold its own in milk. That determines how VERLO develops and evaluates CORE 01, the commercial workhorse of the range.

What an espresso needs in milk coffee

In espresso and milk-based drinks, body carries the flavour. A coffee built for milk needs sweetness at the centre and enough body to remain present after milk is added. CORE 01 is developed toward exactly that application.

CORE 01’s verified direction

The current verified flavour direction for CORE 01:

  • Chocolate
  • Caramel
  • Sweet Spice

This direction is confirmed by internal cupping and reviewed as lots change. VERLO does not publish flavour claims it has not tasted.

How VERLO develops it

Development starts at origin and runs through the roast in West Sumatra. VERLO tests the espresso as espresso and in milk before a profile is considered current. The roast approach is shared at a high level; proprietary roast curves are not published.

What a wholesale buyer should evaluate

A Sumatra espresso for milk coffee is only useful if it is repeatable. When evaluating CORE 01, wholesalers and hospitality partners should consider:

  • consistency of the current cup direction;
  • 1 kg format for volume use;
  • a defined commercial relationship, discussed directly with VERLO.
